Along with new diets and workout regimens, the new year brings the award season. The first few months of every year bring countless red-carpet events decked out with all types of celebrities. The year is always kicked off with the Golden Globes, a celebration of the movies and television shows that filled screens worldwide in the past year. This year was no different and on January 3 celebrities gathered at the the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. while WCHS students gathered on their couches to watch the night unfold.
A host can make or break an award show. From Tina Fey and Amy Pohler to Ricky Gervais, the Golden Globes have always been known to have iconic comedic personalities leading the night. This year was no different as comedian Nicky Glaser took the stage. Having recently gained popularity for her part in “The Roast of Tom Brady,” Glaser upheld her reputation by making hilarious jokes about the past year and poking fun at celebrities.
“I think she was the perfect choice for a host,” WCHS senior Sydney Barrett said. “She was able to make jokes about movies and celebrities in a way that did not offend them. She found the perfect balance and was so funny.”
There was an immense amount of pressure this year after last year’s host, Jo Koy, was unable to find the balance that Glaser did. He offended nearly everyone in attendance along with viewers at home with inappropriate sexist jokes surrounding the blockbuster movie “Barbie”.
“This year was so much better than last year with the host,” Barrett said. “I just really did not find him super funny so it did not live up to what the usual hosts bring to the show.”
One of the biggest parts of the night is the red carpet: celebrities arrive one by one to show off the designer looks that have been planned out months in advance. Social media is updated constantly as the outfits come in, and with them comes the judgment and critical eyes of the masses. Some of the standout looks this year included Angelina Jolie in a McQueen dress with hanging crystals that swayed as she walked, Demi Moore in a Giorgio Armani structured champagne silk look and Mikey Madison in a golden scaled sequin fitted dress.
“I do not always watch the Golden Globes but I will always keep up with what everyone wears,” WCHS senior Gabby Mariam said. “My favorites were Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s outfits. Cynthia’s was just such a cool shape and concept with the almost boxy hips and Ariana just looked very elegant.”
With fashion praise also comes negativity. Every celebrity comes to red carpets fearing the “worst dressed list” but inevitably there will be some that miss the mark with their outfit and end up on the dreaded catalog. Some of these stars included Glen Powell in an awkward black suit with a brown silk shirt and Melissa McCarthy who arrived in a pink jumpsuit with a very large and loud ruffled cape over it. Even more talked about than the fashion is the drama and gossip that inevitably consumes the whole night.
“The biggest piece of news that I heard about was that Zendaya and Tom Holland got engaged,” Barrett said. “Zendaya came to the red carpet wearing a wedding ring and no one knew that they were engaged. I was really excited about it, I am a big fan of both of them.”
Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner also made news at the event as they attended together for the second year in a row. Jenner did not walk the red carpet with Chalamet but accompanied him for the rest of the evening. Attention was drawn to the couple when a video surfaced of actress Demi Moore greeting the table and seemingly ignoring Jenner. Although the interaction did make news, it was not the only reason Moore made headlines. After a 45-year career, Moore won her very first award for her movie “The Substance” and delivered a beautifully emotional speech. History was also made when Fernanda Torres, the star of “Ainda Estou Aqui (I’m Still Here),” won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Film. The first Brazilian to ever win in the category, Torres inspired countless people with her moving acceptance speech.
“The speeches will always be my favorite part of the night,” Barrett said. “The true reason for the show is to celebrate the actors and I love to see my favorites win. I also love seeing an underdog win and be so surprised. Those will always be my favorite.”
