Mowing lawns, babysitting and lifeguarding are all pretty common spring and summer jobs for high school students, but how many students make money by resealing driveways? Junior Jake Sickels started his own business where he does just that.
According to doityourself.com, a home repair website, driveways need to be repaired just like anything else around the home.
“Basically [I] put a new cover of tar on the driveway to make it look like new,” Jake said.
According to servciemagic.com, a home improvement website, driveways should be resealed every three to ten years. The exact number depends on the amount of sun, rain and snow that hits the driveway.
“After all of the snow we have had, a lot of the driveways will need to be redone,” Jake said. “The demand should go up, but [even without the recent snowstorms] there is a pretty steady supply of work.”
There is no standard timeline when it comes to resealing driveways because each driveway is its own project, and no two are exactly alike.
“It normally takes me about one and a half hours to two hours to complete a driveway, but it can change depending on the size of the driveway,” Jake said.
According to doityourself.com, not many people think about resealing their driveways, and even fewer people decide to go out and reseal it themselves.
“Resealing driveways is pretty unique, and not too many people do it,” Jake said.
With that being said one might expect it to be difficult to acquire materials, but according to Jake, it is actually fairly simple.
“It’s pretty easy for me to buy materials,” Jake said. “I usually buy them from Lowe’s or Home Depot and buying in bulk is cheaper.”
According to Jake, the benefit of having his own business is that he has the ability to control all aspects of it.
“I have a lot of flexible hours,” Jake said. “I mainly [work] in the spring and summer when I have time and the pay is very good.”
While resealing driveways tends to pay well, the individual cost of a driveway is largely dependent on its location and size.
“I usually charge around $300 per house,” Jake said. “But I also have to pay for materials, so depending on the specific driveway I can make a lot [more or less] money.”
