It’s sweeping the nation. High schools and colleges all over the country and the world are doing it. It’s the lip dub.
A lip dub is a music video where hundreds of students mouth words to a song.
Boston University, for example, used a combination of Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and “ABC” as the student filming the video walked through different buildings and around the campus while over 100 students popped up along the way lip-syncing the songs.
This year, CHS students decided to give it a try.
Junior Andrew Shebest came up with the idea after watching a lip dub on the Internet and suggested the idea to senior Scott Schuler. Schuler made the facebook group “Winston Churchill High School Lip Dub” to get the word out. In the group, which has over 650 members, students discuss song and filming ideas.
“I want to do it because I believe this can be a very fun experience that we will all remember for a long time,” Schuler said. “Also, I’m really excited about putting together such a large and complicated video with so many different people involved.”
Over 70 song choice suggestions were made on the facebook group wall. After a virtual vote open to all students, the leadership team decided on the song “Forever” by Chris Brown.
“I think [the lip dub is] cool because it’s uniting the school and getting people excited about something to do together,” junior Emily Shapiro said. “It would be a lot of fun to do with my friends and it would be really cool to see how it turned out.”
Along with Shebest and Schuler, senior Alex Cort is the third lip dub planning committee leader.
“It is an opportunity to bring all parts of the school together in a fun and interesting form of media,” Cort said. “Furthermore, it shows all the opportunities and talents students at Churchill have.”
According to Schuler, the lip dub committee has been planning out the route through the school that the video will follow and a rough draft of the divisions of the lyrics.
“I would like to see at least 300 people participate,” Schuler said. “We will need a great deal of people to line the background. The video will only be impressive if we have a lot of people showing a lot of spirit.”
The lip dub organizers plan to have auditions for the lead roles in the video.
“We are advertising through different mediums, the main being Facebook,” Cort said. “We will also be utilizing the Daily Dose as well as other school functions to get the word out.”
The 2010 lip dub has not been approved by administration yet, but keep a lookout for more information to come about auditions and a set date.
