Horror movies on Halloween are a tradition for many, including the Observer staff. There are countless quality horror movies out there, but there are just as many gaudy, cheap and tasteless scary movies. Many horror fans love these movies not despite their quality, but because of it. To celebrate the spooky season, here are some of the Observer staff’s favorite “bad” horror movies!
Hubie Halloween
“‘Hubie Halloween’ (2020) is hilariously bad but stands as one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The movie uses wildly inappropriate jokes often delivered at the most unexpected times. Its star-studded cast, including actors like Adam Sandler, Noah Schnapp and Peyton List was a big reason why I was so excited for this movie and watched it the second it came out. It was definitely not what I was expecting, but I loved it and since then, I have watched it every year on Halloween.”

Fear Street Part 1: 1994
This was the first horror movie I ever watched at a sleepover. It was pretty bad, and had cheap plot twists. Though, there was a pretty horrifying death involving a bread slicer in a grocery shop… But I’ll always remember staying awake until 3 a.m. (the witching hour!) to watch that movie on my old, buffering laptop with my cousin in her bunk bed, while eating an entire bag of Takis and a cereal box of Choco Puffs. This movie is part of one of my favorite memories, which is why it is one of my favorite horror movies.”

Happy Death Day
“I really like ‘Happy Death Day’ because it combines the slasher trope and premise of reliving the same day over and over again with quirky humor and over-the-top characters. The movie is so ridiculous that it ends up actually being entertaining. I first watched it with my best friends a couple of years ago and we could not stop laughing the entire time and yelling about the ‘parallels’. 10/10 recommend watching on Halloween!”

Coraline
“Some may consider this to be bad because it is a kid’s movie. However, I enjoyed it because I think it demonstrates the important lesson of how an ‘ideal world’ is not always ‘ideal.’ I first watched it with friends around Halloween time. We all recount it being a not-too-scary horror movie with incredible stop-motion animation.”
