As 2024 comes to a close, WCHS students have begun to look toward the new year. Students may take this time to reflect on their own lives, and create resolutions to make 2025 great. However, many will also focus on the bigger picture and try to predict what newsworthy events will happen during the new year. Social media is rife with trend predictions, whether that be fashion, music or movies, and everyone wants to know what 2025 has in store. This list includes a few predictions about the new year.
Galaxy Print
After being shunned by many after the 2010s, galaxy print has been ignored for nearly a decade. Many closely associate it with a completely different time period than the modern day, often seeing it as childish. Although it may not return in full force, there is a high chance that galaxy grint will start to make its comeback in 2025. People should be on the lookout for this pattern wherever they shop.
Return of movie musicals
After the disasters of recent movie musicals like “Dear Evan Hansen” (2021) and “Mean Girls” (2024), movie musicals have become the target of constant backlash. This is mainly because these movies lack the genuine care that made past musical adaptations captivating. Both rely on big-name actors who usually do not have a passion for the genre or production as a whole. However, with the release of “Wicked” (2024), starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, many predict this genre will make a comeback.
This movie spent nearly three years in production, with both main actors sharing an extremely prolific musical background and deep love for the original musical. The appreciation for its source material as well as the effort put into this movie is demonstrated through how every aspect of this movie has been created with care, from the costumes, the backgrounds and even the easter eggs. The success of “Wicked” is sure to lead to a revival of the movie musical genre.
The end of the bow
2024 was all about bows as a trend, whether that be as a part of a hairstyle, wall art or a pattern on a piece of clothing. However, the bow has been so overused in the last year that its stylishness is sure to disappear by 2025. Particularly, bows with a pink and white color scheme have become incredibly common and overdone throughout this year.
Instead of bows as hair accessories, claw clips will likely continue to maintain popularity. Their ease of use and countless interesting designs compared to bows will make them a simple alternative.
2016 makeup
Since 2020, there has been a strong shift in makeup trends. While much of the 2010s encouraged heavy makeup for even the simplest task, in the 2020s the general public has focused on much lighter and more natural styles. However, on apps like TikTok and Instagram, there has been a notable desire to return to the extravagant makeup styles of the mid-2010s, which have been coined “2016 makeup.”
This trend is sure to return in 2025. With 2016 being almost a decade ago, people have had plenty of time to miss the makeup from that era. Although it may not return in full force, makeup trends are likely to become more elaborate in 2025 to celebrate the nearly decade-old style.
The death of Netflix
Netflix has long been stuck in a death spiral. They have shifted from producing a limited amount of quality content to producing as much content as possible in the hope of increasing viewership, often sacrificing substance for quality. This new plan, coupled with the fact that Netflix has made sharing accounts nearly impossible, has left subscribers disillusioned with the platform. What was once the pioneer of streaming has become a hollow imitation of itself. Whenever people hear “Netflix Original” they immediately know there is a high chance it will be a substandard movie or show. The harm Netflix has done to its reputation will inevitably cause its decline in 2025.
As 2025 begins, students should pay attention to see if these predictions come true. Part of the fun of a new year is making predictions of one’s own. Everyone should try to observe what is going on around them so they can better understand what the future holds and make guesses of their very own.
