An example of one is, “What happened, happened.” This means that everyone makes mistakes, and it’s not necessary to always worry about schoolwork. Also, another “lema” said, “Your walls contain my future.” This says that the actions and activities that occur in this building are the causes of the future of the students. Additionally, another “lema” says, “The destination is not what is important, it’s the journey.” The “lema” says that it is necessary that every student enjoys and lives in the present.

The messages and tones of the lemas are positive and exist in order to inspire everyone. But, there is a problem. There is a lot of controversy over whether the lemas are art or graffiti. “I believe that they’re graffiti because you shouldn’t write on things that aren’t yours,” says one student while another says, “the ‘lemas’ are art because they have a positive message.” As of this moment, there is no answer as to what the overall opinion of the “lemas” is.

CHS is not the only place that has mottos like this. A very similar phenomenon occurred in Madrid. There are anonymous artists that love Madrid who created verses like this as well, but they were on the ground on the streets. The mottos there could be verses of songs or popular poems. In both places the controversy over whether the artists are criminals or not exists, and there is no definite answer in Madrid either. The “lemas” in both places also have a positive and inspirational message. If other schools want to have a more positive environment, I recommend that the students there make “lemas” as well.

In conclusion, the “lemas” are strange and controversial verses that express positive feelings of artists. It is art that is free to see, and they are typically short enough to read quickly while passing by. Pay attention–in the future, anything could emerge without warning. Will more “lemas” appear? No one knows what the future will bring.
