Despite the expectations of a successful playoff run, the girls volleyball team ended its regular season with four consecutive losses to Northwood, Damascus, Sherwood and Paint Branch.
Inconsistency has been a problem for this inexperienced team as the record shows. Paint Branch defeated the Bulldogs 4-1 Nov. 3 as the team continued its four-game losing streak. The team came back strong, winning three sets, but was unable to finish as its serving was inconsistent throughout the game.
“I think we could have maybe pushed another set and possibly won because we played really well the third set, which was the set we won,” sophomore Adriana Lee said. “We just need to keep going strong and not give up so quickly, and the team needs to become more consistent in all aspects.”
Despite the loss to Damascus Oct. 21, 0-3, the Bulldogs continued to fight hard against Sherwood Oct. 27. 0-3, but was unable to come out with the win.
“Many teams have multiple club players, and we really don’t have that much experience, since we’re a relatively young team, but we are always really enthusiastic during games and practice,” Lee said. “I think we need to work on communication and really working together and coordinating what we do.”
Though the team was expecting to beat Northwood, CHS was defeated 3-0 Oct. 15.
In the first and second set of the game, the team missed serves and was not consistent in their returns and passing.
“Northwood is a high level team but we were expecting to get the win, so we were a bit surprised,” senior captain Clara Sze said. “This game really pointed out our weakness: inconsistency.”
The inexperienced team lost many seniors last year and has been focusing mostly on finding the rhythm that the previous team had demonstrated. Despite its record, the team’s chemistry grew as a whole and hopes that in the upcoming season, its improvement will show.
“This season was more of a rebuilding season as the younger players began to get comfortable with the game itself and the team members,” coach Amanda Cook said. “Now that everyone is comfortable with each other, we are looking to focus mainly on developing strong team chemistry as well as individual skills.”
