Freshman Hunter Sutton became the state champion for the 119-pound weight class March 5 at the Cole Field House at the University of Maryland.
“It feels really good to win states,” Sutton said. “The coaches are really hoping for more state titles in the future.”
Sutton defeated Tuscarora junior Xavier Spruill in the championship match of the 119-pound weight class to capture CHS its first individual state wrestling title since 2003 and became only the sixth freshman in Montgomery County history to win a state championship.
Sutton and senior captain D.J. Gagner were the only members of the team to make it to the
Maryland 4A/3A West regional championships. Gagner came in sixth place in the 171-pound weight class.
The wrestling team finished the season with a 6-7 record, and Sutton, who finished with an individual record of 33-3, is optimistic for the team’s future.
“It’s good because we have a lot of freshmen so we have a good foundation for building a team,” Sutton said. “Our team will be very strong in upcoming years.”
