Girls lacrosse began the season red hot, slaughtering Whitman 22-7 at home April 2. The win improved the Lady Bulldogs overall record to 4-0 with a conference record of 2-0.
The team led 10-0 in the first half and did not let the Vikings catch them. Senior Katie Ruben led CHS with eight goals as the Lady Bulldogs proved to have one of the most explosive offenses in the county.
“Throughout the entire game, we were dominating Whitman,” junior Alex Fox said. “It started hailing in the middle of the game, but we stayed strong and pulled through with a win despite the bad weather conditions.”
The Lady Bulldogs’ dominance started with a 13-8 comeback victory at home against rival Wootton March 30. Wootton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the game and led 6-5 at the half. In the second half, CHS gained all the momentum after junior Mairin Hall scored a goal to put the Bulldogs up 9-8. Hall’s goal opened up the floodgates as CHS went on to score four straight goals en route to victory.
“Even though the game was close and there was a lot of pressure, we focused on playing our best and didn’t pay attention to the score of the game,” Fox said.
The Lady Bulldogs defense played a major role in the win, holding the Patriots to only three goals in the second half. Seniors Samantha Soma and Jamie Oppenheimer and junior Colby Ranck played aggressive defense that forced many key turnovers, while junior goalie Kristina Roberts had 13 saves.
“Our defense is always consistent, strong and rarely lets the opposing team get ahead,” Fox said.
The Lady Bulldogs also had a vital March 25 12-11 win over Sherwood, whom they defeated in last year’s County Championship.
CHS held an 8-4 lead going into halftime, but Sherwood refused to give up. The Warriors fought back in the second half and eventually cut the lead to one.
“The game against Sherwood tested if we are a great team or a championship team,” head coach Christen P. Gjeldum said.
The game clearly proved CHS to be a championship team as junior goalie Kristina Roberts had an incredible save in the last few seconds to stop Sherwood from tying the game.
“The win proved that we can handle pressure,” Gjeldum said. “The win brought us closer to the team goal to never give up and win every game this season.”
In the victory, Ruben scored three goals, Hall scored five goals and junior Madelyn Flax scored four goals. On the defensive end, Soma and Ranck played great defense and forced key turnovers.
“Mairin Hall and goalie Kristina Roberts have stepped up their game this season,” Gjeldum said.
“Roberts has had some amazing saves this season and Hall plays very smart offensively.”
In the first game of the season, the Lady Bulldogs had a blow-out 20-8 win at B-CC March 21. CHS seemed to have the same offensive firepower compared to last year’s team as eight different players scored.
Last season, the Lady Bulldogs won the County Championship and lost in the state semi-final game. Despite losing many seniors from last season, CHS proved to be just as big of a threat in a dominant performance.
“The keys to our victory over B-CC were teamwork, communication and good transitions,” Roberts said. “We also won many draws and took good shots on goal.”
In the victory, Ruben led the team with eight goals. Hall also contributed four goals and five assists, and Flax added three goals.
“The win was a great way to begin the season but we still need work on groundballs to become a better team,” Roberts said.
