As the trees become bare and frost appears on the grass, it is also the sign of the ending of an impressive WCHS fall athletic season. Congratulations are in order for Varsity Football, Volleyball, Golf, Soccer, Cross Country, Cheer, and Field Hockey for their remarkable seasons. While the Ice Hockey season is not over, they also deserve credit for their wonderful start.

“I feel like as a school we’ve been doing really well in a ton of different sports,” Varsity Hockey and WCHS Cross Country runner sophomore Matthew Kim said.  “This past week and especially during the weekend (November 12th through the 14th) there were about five or six different events from different sports where our teams were either in the playoffs or competing for states. I think as a school that’s a great accomplishment.”

While the Varsity Football team’s season didn’t finish how they wanted it to, their overall season impressed the community. During the regular season they went 7-2 and won their first playoff game in 10 years.

“This was the best season I’ve been a part of,” Cisco Ren said, a junior and member of the football team. “We had lots of confidence in every game this year and it showed in our play.”

While the football organization did a full 180, going from 1-8 in 2019 to 8-3 in 2021, matchups were also being won by Cross Country. At the MPSSAA State Championships for Cross Country, the boys team finished third overall, and the girls finished eighth overall. This capped off an outstanding season for both the boys and girls this year.

“I thought we had a really solid season this year,” Kim said. “It’s not guaranteed that we even make it to states, so I thought it was impressive to finish third as a team and have a few people like Julien, Sebby, and Henry to place top spots.”

Success must be in the air at WCHS because the cheer team finished first at the Westminster Invitational and are county as well as regional champions. Big congratulations should go to everyone on the team and the coaching staff that put a lot of time and effort into their successful season.

“The cheer team is at every game when we play,” Ren said. “So it’s pretty awesome to see them get first place. It was well deserved.”

While all of these competitions were happening, the girls field hockey and volleyball teams were also competing in their own playoffs. The field hockey team won the MCPS championship game, beating Paint Branch 4-0.

While the success has begun early with fall sports, basketball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, track, wrestling, tennis, and swimming seasons haven’t even occurred yet. Hopefully they can carry on the athletic success that the school has seen recently.

“I feel like more recently, our school has become a powerhouse in sports,” Kim said. “Get ready, because the show has just begun.”
