If you could go back and start freshman year again, what would you do differently? Would you try harder in class? Make different friends? Do something to stand out?
For students who remain at CHS for their high school careers, take some time and consider what you want to accomplish before you graduate. Here are my top ten suggestions of what to accomplish.
• Skip the second half of the day for a movie, IHOP, or just go home and sleep.
However, I would recommend this for a senior, not a freshman who wants to get out of an English paper that is due fifth period.
• Go to a girls sport event… and stay the whole game.
I have played field hockey and lacrosse and it is rare that any of our friends come to the games. I know it might not be as exciting as football or basketball, but have fun and watch your friends play what they put so much time and effort into.
• Get to know a teacher you like really well; it’s always nice to talk to someone.
As a senior, sometimes you have to stay in for lunch every now and then while your friends head off to the mall. But where do you go after the awkward 20 minutes it took to take the math quiz? Make friends with a teacher you like, that way you always have someone to go to, especially if you need someone to talk to.
• Take classes you actually enjoy, not the easy ones.
Usually when classmates say “That class was a joke!” they are being deceitful. I highly suggest taking classes that interest you instead of the popular ones that are rumored to be easy. You will have to do work regardless; it might as well be in something you enjoy learning about.
• Do nothing second semester senior year.
Enjoy it. Some days I have a goal of keeping my backpack on for the whole class period or the whole day.Get creative!
• Don’t abuse Facebook.
Okay we get it, you went out this weekend. Congratulations! But did you really need to post three photo albums to prove it? No one really cares…
• Do whatever it takes to get a parking spot senior year.
Coming from someone who had to park on Gainsborough every day this year, it sucked. I prefer my sleep, and walking from the power lines to school was never something I enjoyed. If you don’t get a lottery parking spot, see what you can do to get one or carpool with a friend who does have one.
• Make friends with someone outside of your group; you might just end up being best friends.
The best classes are usually the ones without people you already know. Take the time to talk to other students instead of just asking for last night’s homework assignment.
• Girls, ask out a boy you like, don’t wait around for him.
All the time you spend telling your best friends about the texts between you and your crush does not help your situation. Why not be proactive?
• Don’t stress about getting a B in Spanish class, it’s no big deal.
Maybe it isn’t Spanish class that gives you a tough time, but not getting straight As does not mean that you won’t get into a great college. My advice is to not stress about the little things like a vocab quiz, think of the big picture.
You may agree or disagree with my suggestions, but it doesn’t matter as long as each student understands that he or she should make the best of the time left at CHS and accomplish what means the most.
