So the other day I was sitting in class near the end of the period when my teacher called me over to tell me something important. I had only one more unexcused absence until I would get a loss of credit (LC). Now even though I already completed the AP exam for this class and have little to no reason for even showing up, I have to, to avoid that dreaded LC.
However, with the new proposed LC policy that would go into effect next year, I, along with many of my fellow seniors, wouldn’t be in this predicament. The proposed policy would eliminate the LC altogether.
I believe the proposal is a great idea, but did it really have to come the year after I graduate? And if this policy had been put in place earlier, my senior year would have been a whole lot better. Here is how it would have been different:
1. If you don’t know this already, the Journalism class which I am writing this story for is a special class. After I finish my hard work, doing interviews and making my edits, the last week of the month is a glorified study and social hour. This means a lot of doing nothing in this class. So if this policy were in place this year, you wouldn’t be seeing me in first period very often. Instead you might run into me having a nice early breakfast at Dunkin’ Donuts without a care in the world that I might lose credit in a class that I got an A in.
2. I would not have to hurry back to that dreaded school after lunch just to get there on time. Because of the current policy I am forced to have a 20-minute lunch, while still needing to speed my way back, weaving through lanes and making illegal right turns just to get back on time to avoid a tardy. With the new policy I’d be able to have real, thoroughly intellectual conversation with my friends, while slowly eating a double chicken burrito, without having to check my watch every ten seconds. Also I would be able to carefully make my way back to school following all traffic laws and even if I was a tad bit late, the tardy would mean nothing to my overall grade.
3. Lastly I would be able to skip a couple days of school without lying to the school by forging a doctor’s note. With these days off I would accomplish many things, like a chance to catch up on sleep from the weekend, watching daytime television like one of my favorites, Ellen. Or best of all I could go to work and make money, instead of having to fit it in at night, giving me little time to do my very important senior year homework assignments, which I am forced to do when I have school all day.
So, soon-to-be-seniors, be grateful, because Christmas (or Hanukah) just came early in the form of a great new but year-late policy. Have fun never being in school.
