As seniors finish out the school year and make decisions about their future, many express the desire to make every last second of their high school experience count. While some of the more well-known activities include prom, Senior Assassin, Beach Week, graduation parties and, of course, graduation, some of the smaller events that get swept under the rug remain graduated seniors’ favorite memories.
On April 2, during the normal school day, WCHS seniors will enjoy breakfast all together before packing into buses and heading to Dave & Buster’s to spend the rest of their day there. This annual tradition, known as Senior Day, has been around for many years and provides seniors the opportunity to escape the stress of school.
“When we got the email about Senior Day, I was really excited and signed up as soon as I could,” WCHS senior Zander Greenspun said. “My older brother went on a Senior Day trip too when he was a senior and loved it, so I was just so excited to finally experience it for myself.”
On March 13, WCHS seniors received a notification from the messaging app Remind, informing them that tickets for the event were available to be purchased for $36.50 on School Cash Online (SCO). While the announcement gave a general overview of what the day would look like, many seniors were left wondering what their money would actually cover.
“While I signed up for a bus, turned in the permission slip and paid on SCO, I was not really sure what we were actually doing,” WCHS senior Aleeza Ali said. “I am definitely excited to spend the day with my friends, but I wish we were doing something more fun.”
In past years, seniors have gone to places like farms, parks and orchards for Senior Day. This year’s choice of Dave & Buster’s takes a more modern approach, but many seniors are divided on how they are feeling.
“I am definitely excited about Dave & Buster’s, but I know some of my friends are not very happy with what we are doing,” Greenspun said. “However, I do not think the whole day will be spent playing video games. I think most of our class is going to take the time to just hang out with each other and really enjoy our last few months together.”
The agenda for the day provides limited details: breakfast, a Senior Class Meeting in the auditorium, multiple hours at Dave & Buster’s and finally, a Senior Class Picture. The trip offers both a fun experience for students and an important session about end-of-year activities and graduation information.
“I think the presentation will be enlightening and important and I’m eager to hear what they have to say since we haven’t really talked about graduation a lot,” Ali said. “Most people have spent a little time ordering their cap and gown, sending in baby pictures or planning graduation parties, but not many have gotten those small, but important details. That is why I think the presentation will be so important.”
With all things considered, Senior Day is an excellent opportunity for seniors to not only take a well-earned break but to take time to connect with their classmates that they may not have spent much time with outside of school. Seniors are eagerly awaiting graduation, but Senior Day will give them one final celebration before they end their high school careers.
“No matter what we are doing, I think all of us are just excited to spend the day together as a class,” Greenspun said. “It is really less about the activities, more about connecting with friends we’ve been with for four, and for some, 12 years.”
